Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

Dementia refers to the deterioration of mental abilities such as memory, intellectual ability, abstract thinking skills, judgment, planning, and language skills. These symptoms are severe enough to impair social or occupational functioning, and may also be accompanied by personality changes.  Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia among the elderly, affecting between two and four million individuals in the United States alone.
